If you’re already taking—or have taken—college classes, those classes might count toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing completion program. If you’re considering a career in nursing as a next step, it’s worth exploring whether your coursework puts you ahead of the game. Here’s what to know about BSN requirements for a completion program.

Completion programs are designed for students who have already completed the prerequisite program requirements or are in the process of doing so. Because basic coursework is completed, the completion program is shorter than a regular BSN. DCN Houston’s program is an in-person program that can be completed in seven quarters, just under two years. It focuses on hands-on lab experiences, small-group class environments and clinical components, giving students direct experience with nursing education.

Another upside of a completion program is students tend to be well prepared for their nursing education. They’ve already handled college-level classes and are ready to hit the ground running.

Here’s what you need for a program like DCN’s. If you already have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, will be able to apply many of their credits towards the first two years of the BSN program.   Students with a bachelor’s degree must have completed 21 specific pre-requisite semester credits with a grade of C or better and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. Students without a bachelor’s must have completed 56 semester credits with a cumulative 2.0 GPA and  a grade of C or better in pre-requisite courses. General education disciplines include humanities, arts, social sciences, math, science and communications. There are a few other requirements to explore as well.

Whether you have a degree already or not, many different classes count toward the requirements and shorten your path. For example, if have completed English 101, sociology, and a history class  they may fill the gen ed requirements, putting you partway toward your degree. Direct pre-requisites include classes like microbiology, anatomy and physiology, psychology, and algebra. These are classes you must take to be able to apply to the program.
